Cyber Monday will purportedly be the biggest shopping day of the year for retailers. For charities, the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, coined "Giving Tuesday", is one of the largest fundraising days of the year. Using the power of social media, non-profits, business, and individuals come together to volunteer, donate, or give their voice to a cause they care about.

If you work at a charity, hopefully, you'll have put to use the great toolkit that GivingTuesday.org put together to make the most of this opportunity.

For companies, #GivingTuesday is a chance for you to showcase how you are making a difference in your community. Start by supporting a cause aligned with your business and engage your employees and customers around it. Check out the toolkits on GivingTuesday.ca or consider these ideas:

  1. Plan a team-building volunteer opportunity
  2. Match the donations your employees personally give to charity on #GivingTuesday
  3. Showcase the support you give to a charity you work with through your social media channels
  4. Match donations that your clients give on #GivingTuesday to the charity you support.

 For the individual, #GivingTuesday is a time to look at how you are giving and possibly discover an organization or cause you haven't previously considered. There are also some opportunities to double your donation. For example, the Canadian government is matching all donations made to qualifying charities that are supporting the Rohingya persecution in Myanmar. Two charities you can support for this critical humanitarian effort are Doctors Without Borders or Global Medic to double your donation on Tuesday, November 28th.
